What GRecorder handles

When you start a capture and choose a tab, window, or screen in Chrome, GRecorder processes the resulting screen video or screenshot. The capture can include website content and visible actions such as pointer movement. If you enable them and grant Chrome permission, it also processes microphone audio and camera video. You can import your own image or video files. Recordings may contain whatever you choose to show or say, including personal information or communications visible in the selected source.

GRecorder keeps file names, duration, capture time, playback and upload status, and editing information with your local media. It stores your recording preferences and public player URL in local browser storage.

Local storage and Google Drive

Recordings, screenshots, imports, and unfinished recording chunks are saved in your browser's local IndexedDB on this device. The extension and website have separate local libraries. Your local media remains until you delete it, clear browser data, or remove the extension or browser profile. Downloading makes a separate file on your device.

Connecting Google Drive uses Chrome's Google sign-in flow. GRecorder receives an OAuth access token to call Google's Drive API and reads your connected account's display name and email address. The token is used for Google API requests and is not sent to a GRecorder server or stored in GRecorder's media database. Chrome may cache the token as part of its identity service. GRecorder may store the connected account email, Drive file ID, sharing status, upload progress or session URL, and app-created file metadata locally so it can resume uploads and sync recordings created by GRecorder.

When you choose to upload, GRecorder sends the selected media and its file name and app metadata over HTTPS directly to your Google Drive account. Sync Drive lists files created by GRecorder. GRecorder does not scan unrelated Drive files. Your Drive files remain there until you remove them in Google Drive; deleting a local library entry does not delete its Drive file.

Sharing and the companion website

Uploads can be private or shared with anyone who has the link. When you choose public sharing, GRecorder asks Google Drive to grant an anyone-with-link reader permission for that file. Anyone with the link may view it. You can remove that public permission in GRecorder, but it cannot recall copies someone has already downloaded or remove permissions separately granted in Google Drive.

A public player link opens the companion website, which embeds the Google Drive player. GRecorder does not copy the media to its website. The website host may process ordinary request information such as IP address, requested URL (which can include a Drive file ID), and time in server logs; Google receives requests needed to display the embedded Drive file. There are no GRecorder analytics or advertising trackers.

Support and third parties

The optional donation link opens PayPal. Payment takes place on PayPal; GRecorder does not collect card numbers or payment credentials. If a supporter agrees to appear on the public supporter wall, the chosen public display name and donation total may be entered by the project owner and stored by the website's hosting and database providers. Those details are publicly visible until removed.

Google processes sign-in, Drive files, and public Drive playback under its own terms and privacy policy. The companion website is hosted on Vercel; its supporter database may use Neon. These providers receive data only as needed for the features described above. GRecorder does not sell user data or use it for advertising or credit decisions.

Your choices and contact

You decide when to start and stop capture, whether to include microphone or camera, which files to upload, and whether to make an uploaded file public. You can delete local library entries, clear browser storage, change Drive sharing, or delete Drive files in your Google Drive account. To request a change or removal from the public supporter wall, or ask a privacy question, contact the GRecorder project.

GRecorder's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We will update this page when the product's data handling changes.
